Why a maternity nurse?
A Maternity nurse is a trained nurse with newborn experience who comes to your home shortly after your baby is born, it can be as soon as when you are back from the maternity or after a few weeks when you are settled at home. A maternity nurse will help you set up the sleeping and feeding routine for your baby (night feeding, preparing bottles, bringing the baby to you during the night, bathing and changing the baby…), and will help you understand what to do for any issues that arise (colics, reflux, etc) They can help organising the home too so that all is smoother for the parents who can focus on the little one and their siblings if there are any.
A maternity nurse can come from a few hours to a full 20 hours shift to help you with the new arrival, from a few days per week to 5/6 days per week.
When to start the search?
You can start looking for your maternity nurse from the start of your 3d trimester. Some maternity nurses are booked up a few months in advance1
We also do have and can fulfill requests when the baby is born, as some parents prefer to wait until the birth.
What are the costs?
A Maternity Nurse is often self-employed and are responsible for their own Tax and National Insurance Contributions. Their rate depends largely on experience but here is a guideline:
£350– £450 per 24h or £15 – £18 per hour
