Every September thousands of youngsters take the first tentative steps on an education journey that will shape their future. Starting or changing schools can be one of the biggest transitions in a child’s life and the first day of school can be intimidating. Many of them feel overwhelmed and anxious and it is perfectly normal. Here are 5 books that you can read with your children to help them to understand everything about starting school and take away their fear.
1. First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg
This is an excellent book for the child who is worried about changing schools. The main character, Sarah, is very anxious and nervous about her first day of school. She has “first day jitters”! Mr. Hartwell continues to encourage Sarah to go to her new school, but Sarah is reluctant and afraid. The full-page illustrations by Judy Love are colorful and engaging, and don’t show Sarah’s face until she arrives at her new classroom. This charming and familiar story will delight readers with its surprise ending.
2. Little School by Beth Norling
Little School is an enjoyable picture book about 20 preschoolers and the fun they have during a busy day at their school. The story follows all 20 through their preparations for school, to a day at Little School, to their return home. This book is perfect for the child who is starting preschool, nursery school, or daycare and wants to know exactly what to expect.
3. Sam and Gram and the First Day of School by Diane Blomberg
Gram helps Sam get ready for his first day at school. The story takes the child hour-by-hour through a typical first day at school, so that the child will know just what to expect on his or her own big day. 4. I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child
A humorous take on a child’s trepidation about starting school. Lola is sure she is “too absolutely small for school,” but Charlie, her older brother, humorously and patiently convinces she’s not. Charlie give Lola all kinds of funny reasons that stretch the imagination that she needs to go to school. Child’s mixed media artwork definitely adds to the fun.
5. Chu’s First Day of School by Neil Gaiman
Chu, the adorable little panda first introduced in Chu’s Day returns for another outing as it’s time for him to start school! The story will tickle the funny bones of children 2 to 6. It will also provide some reassurance to children apprehensive about starting school when they learn about, and laugh at, Chu’s experiences on the first day at school.
