Christmas decorations, especially candles and electrical lighting, can be fire hazards, so take a few precautions when decorating for Christmas.
- Never leave a light Christmas tree or other decorative lighting display unattended. Turn them off before you leave home.
- Decorate with children in mind. Do not put ornaments that have metal hooks, or look like food or candy, on the lower branches where small children can reach them.
- Never leave burning candles unattended. Don’t put candles on a tree.
- Artificial snow sprays are harmful for young children if inhaled. Use them very carefully if you have children at home.
- Christmas plants and berries such as holly berries, poinsettias and Jerusalem cherry are all potentially harmful if eaten. If a child eats any part of a plant, call the nearest Poison Control Center.
